Our Four Pillars of Action
We spearhead initiatives for policy advocacy and mutual accountability at the global, national, and regional levels to address power inequities. We ground multilateralism in equity.
The ultimate goal of MCLD is to bring community-led development to scale everywhere it is needed. We engage in a number of opportunities to advocate for inclusive, equitable governance, promoting devolution, and pushing for policy changes.
We strengthen the practice of community-led development and strong, accountable local governance through community organizing and mobilizing, intentional (un)learning, and co-creation of tools and practices.
MCLD is committed to mutual capacity strengthening in several forms. Our learning platforms like the (Un)Learning Labs, our research tools, and our working groups are several examples.
We foster values-based collaboration with organizations, networks, and stakeholders to amplify our collective impact.
We build connections between our members and across our National Associations. We also collaborate across networks on specific issues most relevant to our sector.
We strengthen local networks and organizations through an intentional focus on well-being, strong governance processes, and resource mobilization.
We strive to ensure that our National Associations are resilient, can respond to shocks, and are sustainable. Our goal is to consistently strengthen the sustainability of MCLD and our members.
How We Convene and Co-Create
MCLD members work together to take community-led development to scale. As part of that, MCLD equips organizations and communities with the tools, knowledge, and resources needed to drive their development agendas. We strengthen the practice of community-led development and strong, accountable local governance through intentional (un)learning and the co-creation of tools and practices.

Our Focuses
- Building a collective discourse on CLD, transcending in-house terminology for facilitation interventions, to reference a shared language and framework of analysis in how members describe their work on public websites, write papers and project proposals.
- Promote the distinction of CLD, through coordinated social media campaigns.
- Organize and participate in seminars, side-events, experience-sharing meetings that raise the profile of our collective commitment to CLD and its principles, and our approaches to facilitate it.
- Share methodology through webinars and papers on our movement website.
- Encourage field teams to build country-level chapters of the movement that can work with local government ministries, develop MOUs, and seek to put in place large-scale CLD programs.
