Across rural Liberia, the Foundation Voice for Justice Network (FVJN) is working to help communities understand, prepare for, and respond to the growing threats of climate change. Through climate change education, awareness, and advocacy, FVJN prioritizes community engagement to encourage environmental stewardship and climate action. Our initiatives focus on practical knowledge and skills to build resilience.
Community Awareness and Public Education
Through community meetings, workshops, focus group discussions, and awareness sessions, FVJN brings residents together to explore the causes and consequences of climate change.
These conversations have emphasized that climate change is a local issue that directly affects farmers, women, youth, traditional leaders, and vulnerable households whose livelihoods depend heavily on natural resources. We focus on how changing weather patterns, prolonged droughts, excessive rainfall, flooding, soil erosion, and rising temperatures affect agriculture, water resources, public health, and local economies.
Protecting Farmlands Through Sustainable Agriculture
Sustainable agriculture to improve long-term food production is an important part of FVJN’s approach. We encourage farmers to:
- Protect fertile farmland from degradation and soil erosion.
- Avoid indiscriminate bush burning and destructive farming methods.
- Practice tree planting and agroforestry to improve soil fertility.
- Use environmentally friendly farming techniques.
- Preserve water sources that support agricultural production.
- Reduce activities that contribute to environmental degradation.
FVJN encourages community members to adopt climate-smart farming practices that increase agricultural productivity while protecting the environment for future generations.
Recognizing Liberia’s rich forest resources, FVJN has consistently advocated for the protection and sustainable management of forests. Community education highlights the role that forests play in regulating the climate, conserving biodiversity, protecting wildlife habitats, and preventing erosion. We encourage reforestation and raise awareness about the impacts of illegal logging and indiscriminate tree cutting.
Youth and Women’s Participation
FVJN believes that effective climate action depends on meaningful community participation. We encourage youth, women, teachers, faith leaders, traditional authorities, farmers, and civil society organizations to become climate champions in their communities.
Our workshops and dialogues create opportunities for these groups to identify local challenges and develop community-led responses. We implement activities ranging from tree planting to sanitation and waste management to build a culture of environmental stewardship and investment in protecting Liberia’s natural resources.
Looking Ahead
The Foundation Voice for Justice Network is turning climate awareness into practical action. Looking ahead, we hope to strengthen partnerships with government agencies, development partners, and fellow organizations working on climate resilience. Despite the resource constraints we face, we hope to expand our climate change awareness initiatives and build sustainable, resilient, and climate-smart communities across Liberia. Building climate resilience starts with the people who know their communities, their land, and their challenges best.
