Global Goals

On September 25, 2015 all 193 member countries adopted “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.” This bold set of goals builds on progress achieved during the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and goes beyond them in several important aspects that provide a stronger basis for community-led development.

Unlike the MDGs, which were largely treated in narrow silos, the 2030 Agenda recognizes that the goals are interlinked and require integrated solutions (the short declaration says this 33 times!) At least 12 of the 17 goals require integrated solutions in communities where hunger and poverty persist.

Perhaps most importantly, Goal 16 include “build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels” – which includes the community level. Two of its targets are:

16.6 Develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions at all levels
16.7 Ensure responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making at all levels
