This month, on our global zoom call — in the run up to International Women’s Day — we commited ourselves to breakthrough on one of the most vital challenges for human progress. In a landmark SSIR piece, Françoise Girard wrote “Only women’s organizations focused on consciousness-raising, coalition-building, and advocacy can bring the kind of systemic change that women the world over need” yet she highlights studies women’s and girl’s group receive only a tiny amount — less than 2 per cent — of philanthropic and international funding.
Let’s explore what we do about this with two women leaders pioneering ways to meet this challenge in Africa;
Selline Korir, Senior Consultant – Peace building, conflict mitigation, Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism, Sexual and gender-based violence, advocacy, mediation and program implementation
Beatrice Boakye-Yiadom, Grants Manager – African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF)
We must not underestimate the impact of women’s knowledge and lived experiences. Both Beatrice and Selline emphasized that women’s knowledge is often underestimated. After we heard about their introductions to gender justice, we discussed key issues both women have faced. Selline noted that women have a deeper understanding of gender injustices, which renders their interventions more powerful. Beatrice emphasized the power of storytelling, building relationships, and advocacy and collaboration. The conversation delved into issues of mistrust of women-led organizations, barriers in terms of accessibility, and how to overcome them.
Participants in the call raised questions on issues including disability inclusion, raising the visibility of women-led organizations, and obtaining project funding.

28 février : finançons le mouvement populaire des femmes !
Ce mois-ci, à l’occasion de notre appel à la mobilisation mondiale – dans la perspective de la Journée internationale de la femme – engageons-nous à réaliser une percée sur l’un des défis les plus vitaux pour le progrès humain. Dans un article historique du SSIR, Françoise Girard a écrit : “Seules les organisations de femmes axées sur la sensibilisation, la formation de coalitions et le plaidoyer peuvent apporter le type de changement systémique dont les femmes du monde entier ont besoin”, mais elle souligne que les groupes de femmes et de jeunes filles ne reçoivent qu’un montant infime – moins de 2 % – du financement philanthropique et international.
Explorons ce que nous pouvons faire pour remédier à cette situation avec deux femmes leaders qui font œuvre de pionnières pour relever ce défi en Afrique :
